Don't think China needs a follower but someone with a bit of backbone and know what respect is all about.

Yes! You explained well. No one owe us a meal.

Our survival depends on our capabilities. Our abilities to network and move forward.

We might have boasted too much over these few years.

18-5-2017 3:51 PMMoonrab wroteRelationship between countries always has its up and down. Not to mention between big and small country.
Even US and SG relationship is not always smooth.

This article is comment from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences think tank and Singapore-China watcher at Cambridge University, this is only professional views.
Of course they have constructive reason for such views, but we experienced such view is not for long term.
There is no permanent political friend and enemy. Everything still must bases on merit and relevance.

Lion City sought only economic benefits from China, while “relying on the US for security”.
“The Belt and Road promises to bring regional connectivity on an unprecedented scale, which could soon undercut Singapore’s most important asset – her position as the premier trade and financial centre between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea,

The above are true hard facts.
It has been repeated endless in many Chinese think tank article. One may wonder why they bother to do it countlessly.

SG need US military alliance, living in the malay archipelago region, and it is an open fact from the begining of her history. I guess the whole world or people in this region knew it long time ago.
And yes, SG need her position as premier trade and financial hub to survive. No prize for guessing it. So it will be a fact that can never be change, at least for the short to medium term.

That is the reason SG has been challenged by many countries endlessly.
This China's OBOR is certainly not the first to crack SG trade and financial hub position. And frankly it will be the most serious challenge that we had been facing all along.

That should reminds Sgrean about LKY advice, nobody in the world owe us lunches.
To survive, we must depend on ourselves and our strategy in buliding alliance with all countries in the world. Especially the super powers. China, US, Europe, UK, India, Our neighbouring countries, etc....
That is also the reason why Sg has open her city nation, economy and even labour resources to the whole world....Big Grin

Just read from the Chinese media with regards to their foreign ministry answering to media questions.

One of which was reported that India and Singapore's navy are going for a joint exercise in the South China Sea...

Looks like both countries who were not invited to the OBOR are trying to provoke China...this is proven our administration is trying to strain the relationship further and with the help of India. Or India is trying to provoke China by dragging Singapore into it...

“The current administration in Singapore is different from the generation of Lee Kuan Yew,” said Xue, the Chinese foreign policy expert. “They are used to dealing with China from their Western perspective that is being a teacher of China, rather than a follower of China,”

Tai, the Cambridge-based observer, said the new Silk Road could drive a permanent wedge between the two countries. “The Belt and Road promises to bring regional connectivity on an unprecedented scale, which could soon undercut Singapore’s most important asset – her position as the premier trade and financial centre between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea,”

The late elder Lee on the vulnerability of small states. Lee in 2009 had said “a small country must seek a maximum number of friends, while maintaining the freedom to be itself as a sovereign and independent nation”.

As long as we do not give up hope on this nation, believe me that there are still chances of "咸鱼翻身"!
