Forum: Older workers have tough time getting past recruiters and HR staff
#21
If you are in your 60s, were in white collar circles and have an extensive network, people will still employ you because when you make a phone call, the deal is considered DONE.

But if you are a blue collar worker, and have been a union member all your life, there's really not much that NTUC can do for you because the job you had been doing does require someone with good eyesight, good hearing, who is dexterous, can squat, can walk fast...and when you are in your 60s, you can only say that once upon a time, you were like that but now, you cannot hear so well, you cannot see so well, so you cannot use a screwdriver like before, you cannot crawl underneath the machine and bend over because you have high blood pressure............forget it lar! The union cannot help you lor! They might try to find you a job as a security guard, just KLKK...

You are wrong.

Is a nurse a civil servant? I mean one who is working for a public hospital? If she has failing eyesiight, cannot hear very well anymore, it will be dangerous for her and the patients if she continues to work as a nurse.

My friend who turns 62 later this year has been informed by PA that his job at the community centre will not be extended. Usually, after 62, it's a contract basis, but for whatever reason, the government decided that he will have to retire...no more iron rice bowl.

So when we source for labour, be it a contractor or employee, we also want someone who is faster and cheaper. If you are in your 60s, let's face it. You know it yourself, no need for me to expose you lar...arthritis, failing eyesight, high blood pressure, the whole nine yards. Which company wants a slow worker? Worse yet, which company wants the risk of an industrial accident, and a MOM investigation?

So yes, age discrimination is real, but that's the way a capitalist economy works. It's about the maximisation of the returns on capital for the owners of capital. If you want a "People's economy", you were born too late. Mao's era is over.

I was ding- dong from Career Fair to WSQ to see Career Counsellor.

Even the Govt can tell me NOT to apply for jobs via Recruitment Agencies because they will add additional 7 or 10 filters to select candidates.

One of them that is most rampant that I heard in their class was AGE Discrimination. And then a "Beautiful Perfect Resume".

PAP knowS, BUT alas! What has been done? That is why I'd rather vote for a Taxi Driver than Tan See Leng.

It's not "What has been done?"

It's "What can the government do?" If you read my above two posts, the answer is that there is nothing the government can do. Even if you kick PAP out and make Jamus the PM.....or if you follow the pecking order and put Pritam Singh there, he cannot do anything.

This is a capitalist economy not a socialist economy. Companies are owned by private investors and not by the State. This is not Mao's China.

If other 10 Developed Capitalist Countries can handle this much better, than why PA P can fail repeatedly for 12 years? I am not asking them to think Out- of-the -Box but just COPY with intention to protect citizens. Making the situation so impalpable does not render any acceptance.

Tan CJ also copy JobsBank from USA & UK 5 years ago but he made it to serve the purpose of FTs.

Same vehement conclusion - PAP is dwelling in Self- Depreciation . Playing Bollywood with excess manpower and having Tan See Leng to housekeep like KAIZEN is clearly beyond his capability and energy.

Tell your children to work in garment sector. thumbs up
Iron rice bowl and no need to worry about retrenchment.

Do you ever see a job fair for retrenchment of civil servants? 127fs4573872

This garment has brought in too many "Foreign Talents" to compete with Sinkies.
Your jobs have been stolen by them. dunsee
