If masks are so protective, why didn't they protect wearers in 1918?

It is well known that studies from the 1918 Spanish flu demonstrated that masks did not work. The Washington Post even said that masks were useless. This is all about scare tactics for political purposes to impose the Great Reset completely altering the economy.
