comments abt they are good and cheap. Singaporean cannot be good?
Why? When most skilled job taken by these FT , Singaporean has opportunity to be trained and put into pratice? If Singaporean is paid as cheap as these FT in the past, can Singaporean have more babies and enough for retirement after paying overpriced housing loan...etc?
So after many years later, many will tell the same as today, Singaporean is not as good as FT !
What a mockery statement!

Train our locals, FHS......! Lower the ratio of FW to locals.Increase those foreigner Levies, including MY.

Those Motorcycles, heavy vehicles, also created a lot of air pollution on our roads. Did our garmen oblivious to them?

Increase FWL.

Many years ago, it was as low as $240 per month, and many Singaporeans complained that the playing field was not level because the CPF employers paid for locals (and PRs) was higher than the FWL, and so employers preferred to hire Malaysians.

Thousands of posts about this were written in all forums.

So the government raised the FWL and it is now as high as $800 a month.

I had argued that employers would pass this to consumers by raising their selling prices, and the end result would be price increases aka inflation. And true enough, prices went up by leaps and bounds in recent years as the FWL, which was staggered, kicked in. Staggered....as in year one, it went up to this, year 2, it went up by another quantum...till it reached $800 a month.

There is no way for a company boss to absorb the increase in FWL. He will pass it to consumers, that is, you and me. You look at the number of cooks and waitresses in any DTF restaurant. Almost all of them are from China and Malaysia. Multiply those by the FWL George has to pay, and you know why xiaolongbao are so expensive.

And did the higher FWL make Singaporeans more competitive? No. These were jobs we did not have enough people to do due to our low TFR. Employers still had to hire FWs but pay more FWL which they passed on to us.

Making a broad statement "Train Singaporeans to do them" is barking up the wrong tree. Singaporeans who can make it to a poly or junior college would NOT enrol in ITE to learn these, get a NITEC cert, and do these jobs for a living. The proportion of Singaporeans with at least a poly diploma....many with degrees and PGs...have risen over the years. You want them to be plumbers or air con men?

foreign vehicles also pay ERP lah ... as for COE, they pay a toll upon entry as well, $35 per entry for car, $4 per motorcyle
